Understanding IPO Investor Categories

QIB · NII · BHNI · SHNI · Retail/IND — what each category means

QIB – Qualified Institutional Buyers

Includes Mutual Funds, Banks, Insurance Companies, and FIIs. High QIB subscription is considered "smart money" and a strong signal of institutional confidence in the company's fundamentals.

sHNI – Small High Net-worth Individual

HNIs applying for shares worth ₹2 Lakhs to ₹10 Lakhs. They fall under the NII (Non-Institutional Investor) category and get 1/3rd of the total NII quota.

bHNI – Big High Net-worth Individual

Investors applying for shares worth more than ₹10 Lakhs. They capture 2/3rds of the NII quota. High bHNI subscription signals deep-pocketed confidence and is often tracked closely for grey market premium correlation.

Retail / Individual Investors

Retail (relevant in case of mainboard IPOs) are individuals bidding up to ₹2 Lakhs. Whereas Individual Investors (relevant in case of SME IPOs) are individuals who apply for a minimum of two lots (exceeding ₹2 Lakhs).

Frequently Asked Questions

IPO Subscription Status – Common Queries

What is IPO subscription status?
IPO subscription status shows how many times an IPO has been applied for relative to the total shares on offer. A subscription of 10x means investors have bid for 10 times the available shares. It is tracked separately for QIB, sHNI, bHNI, and Retail categories and updated every day during the bidding window.
What does oversubscription mean in an IPO?
Oversubscription occurs when total investor applications exceed the shares available in an IPO. A 50x oversubscribed IPO means investors applied for 50 times the available shares. Higher oversubscription generally indicates strong demand and is often associated with better listing gains, though returns are never guaranteed.
What is QIB in IPO subscription?
QIB stands for Qualified Institutional Buyers — Mutual Funds, Banks, Insurance Companies, and FIIs. SEBI reserves at least 50% of mainboard IPO shares for QIBs. A high QIB subscription is widely considered a stamp of institutional confidence and a positive signal for long-term performance.
What is the difference between sHNI and bHNI?
Both fall under the NII (Non-Institutional Investor) category. sHNI (Small HNI) applies for shares worth ₹2L–₹10L and gets 1/3rd of the NII quota. bHNI (Big HNI) applies for more than ₹10L and captures 2/3rds of the NII quota. Allotment in both sub-categories is proportional, not lottery-based.
